Post Four: Should Girls be Allowed to Play Football on Boys Teams

Author: Brady Munger

The question of whether girl's should be allowed to play football on boy's team's is a very large question that has been a large controversy for some time.  There is a large number of people that believe the answer to this question is yes, while there is also a large following of people that think the answer to this question should be no.  There are many reasons for each side of the argument.  Some people want to see even opportunities for both girl's and boy's which means letting them both play together and letting girl's on guy's teams.  Then there are other's that feel that their should be even opportunities, but this does not mean to them having both play on the same teams but having leagues available for girl's to play in.  In our in class assignment, our group created two lists one pro's and one con's of girls playing on boy's football teams.

Pro's
-Increase in diversity
-Equality for boy's and girl's
-Different perspectives of the game coming together
-Bigger target market to advertise game

Con's
-Locker room issues
-Physical contact differences (threat of injury)
-Different motives for playing
-Team relationships between girl and guy player's
-Question of player's playing or not playing (lack of skill or gender the cause)

Overall the pro's list had some great points in it.  The diversity of the sport would be a huge benefit, it would directly increase females interest in the sport, which would then increase the target market which was also on the list.  Also, the issue of equality for both boy's and girl's would be a issue being resolved being both boys and girls were being offered the same opportunities.  On the con's list, there were a few issues that really made you think.  One of the biggest themes were the issue of having two genders on the team. It would bring up a issue of team bonding between to gender's, the locker room issue of having two gender's. or the physical difference between the two genders.  Also, the question of playing time would be huge.  You could never tell whether it would be a reason of skill why a certain player was playing or not playing or a matter of gender.

Overall, I do believe this is an issue that need's to be looked at much more closely.  In my personal opinion there is no right answer to the question.  I believe the best solution would be to have both girls and guys football team's, but the amount of participants usually would not allow for it.  I think that before setting the issue aside it needs to be looked at very closely, and the best solution needs to be found.

  1. This blog brought up a subject that I believe is becoming more prevalent in this day and age. The question of girls being able to play football with the boys is becoming more common in many communities across the country. The group compiled a good pros and cons list and I have to say that I agree with the list completely. The best pros argued are that girls playing football would increase diversity and bring equality to the sport. By allowing girls to play many organizations and schools create a positive environment and show that they do not discriminate, they allow those with the best ability to play.

The cons are also spot on and counter the pros quite well. The threat of injury is greater when you allow girls to play. Boys will not lower their physicality when hitting anyone, especially a girl so injury would become more prominent in the sport. Also locker room issues are a great argument as to why girls playing can be more difficult. This is not only one schools issue, but an entire districts issue as well. If a girl is playing on football team in the district then all schools need to accommodate her. This could be a potential issue.

I would say that this issue can be seen in different views and could go either way. I know that in my school district girls do play football at the Pee Wee level as well as the junior high level. The organization and athletic department do not hold a girl back if she chooses to play football, however we have never had a girl play football at the high school level. I can say that if a school is willing to let a girl play at that level and district is willing to accommodate her needs then she has every right to do so. I come from the Dayton area and have heard numerous stories of Nick Mangold’s sister playing for Centerville and how the district was willing to accommodate her, so really the issue is in the hands of the organization and the district.

  2. I see no reason that girls shouldn't be allowed to participate on football teams if they are physically capable of doing so. In taking up the sport, they are assuming the risks that come from the game and will have to earn their spot on the field like everyone else. Brady put together a very good list of pros and cons. My high school team had a girl on our team as a kicker my sophomore season, and I must say she was not very well-respected within the locker room. In order to accommodate girls on the team, programs must ensure that the women players have separate changing areas which our coaching staff always seemed to treat as a "hassle." Not to mention, she was often teased by teammates on the squad. So I would agree that the "locker room issues" that were posted as a con are a very serious issue.

  3. I do think that girls should have the chance to play football with the boys. However, only the ones that are good enough to play should make the team. That is how it has always been for any sport. When a boy tries out for a football team, if they are good enough they will make it. If they aren't good enough, they won't make it. The athlete's spot on the roster is determined by their performance. It should be no different for a girl trying out for a men's football team. If the girl is good enough to play with the boys, let her play. But they should have to earn their spots on the roster, just like the boys.

  4. Good discussion on this topic. I too thought you did a good job of outlining the pros and cons of the issue.

  5. I am a big fan of volleyball I think it is a very fun sport and love to play it; I have never in my life had it available to me to play on an organized volleyball team. In high school it was strictly a girls sport. I didn’t complain or file a Title IX lawsuit, however all of our men’s sports were open to women football, wrestling, baseball, lacrosse. To me that is not fair at all, if a girl can play on any guys team then a guy should be able to play on any girls team. Equality, isn’t that what Title IX is all about? Yes, if by equality you mean woman playing on men’s teams taking that opportunity away from a man, and not allowing men to play on women’s teams because it takes away an opportunity for women, or if you mean taking opportunities away from men by cutting programs to make room for women’s programs. I am just against Title IX I feel like there could have been a better way to make things equal than attacking men’s programs and opportunities for women’s. In my opinion Title IX just favors women a lot more than it does anything for men.

  6. I thought personally that this group did a good job of explaining the pros and cons to this issue. Brady even mentioned something that our group did not think of and that was the issue of boy and girl teammates developing relationships with one another. This is a big issue and if this occurred I feel that this would hurt the team cause say the couple got into a fight, how would they then relate to one another when they were at practice or in a game. Many football players are in relationships but none would hit as close to home as this one. That and the locker room issue, I know when we had a girl play on my 8th grade football team she had to change in a training room separate from the team. If eventually having girls play on boys teams became a trend schools would have to develop dual locker rooms which would probably cost the school a lot of money. Not that that couldn't be done but I'm just saying there are many barriers that need to be crossed for this to occur.

  7. You and your group did a great job of charting the pros and cons on boys and girls both playing in the same sport on the same playing field. By showing these pros and cons, I was able to look at both sides of the argument. Our group also talked about this topic, deciding that if girls can play in boys’ sports, then boys can play in girls’ sports. This is the fair way of answering the question although some people may disagree. Nonetheless, I think that it is best for girls and boys to be separated in sports. Our group blog has discussed biological differences between men and women as a reason for this belief. Also, we even had classmate David Arnold mention that the number of women athletes could decline if sports became coed.

I appreciate all the feed back from everyone. I figured this would be a rather controversial topic. Many people have their own personal opinions on this matter. I thought was Adam talked about with the number of female athletes declining was a very interesting point. It could absolutely be a possibility of happening. If guys and girls began to play together, or on the same sports the need for female teams might decline, limiting those opportunities. But for every girl that wants to "play with the boys" there is another girl that does not want too. If the number of girls decreased the amount of girls remaining that want to compete against their sex only would decrease, limiting the athletic opportunities. Although this might not happen, it is always a possibility and something I am sure not many people take into consideration. That is a great point Adam, I can admit I never thought about it really but now thinking of it, it could be a real issue if this was to happen.
